NCM Ambassador Report
Sept / Oct  2009
by Glenda Fischer

The National Caravan and the NCM 15th Anniversary

       Ed and I picked up the New England Caravan in Harrisburg, Pa. =
after
attending Corvettes at Carlisle. This year's highlight was racing legend
Mario Andretti. Mario gave a presentation on the stage, followed by
questions and answers. Then it was a mad dash to the MagnaFlow tent
for the autograph session! It was well worth the 90 minute wait to meet
such a legend and gentleman!

       Sunday afternoon the New England Caravan arrived and we all =
departed=20
Monday morning headed for the Belterra Casino Resort in
Florence, Indiana. Other legs of the Caravan arrived and we became a
crazy mix of Vette heads from the U.S., Canada, The Netherlands, =
Australia,=20
and New Zealand!

What a bunch of party animals! Wednesday morning we lined up in groups =
and=20
headed for Bowling Green. New England was one of the first to arrive =
that=20
afternoon.

       What a surprise at the Museum! So much had been added since I was =

there in April.

There was more parking, pretty gardens enhanced the granite benches, but =
inside was
even more of a WOW! The car club area was finished and the NCRS display =
was=20
first in line with a new, very informative video. Our Chapter member =
Kathy=20
Illowiecki and her "DAD'S 59" made an appearance in the film! =20

And another Chapter member, Kevin Cavanaugh has his beautiful 1965 =
Nassau Blue Corvette on display in the Museum.=20
Also new, was a giant photomosaic of a 1953. Then upon entering the =
dome, one is overwhelmed.=20
Anyone who has been to the Museum will recall the big steel grid system =
that supports the=20
dome.=20
Well now, those grids are "picture frames" to beautiful black & white =
portraits of all the Hall of Fame
Inductees. And inside the Mobil Spire are displays of the current =
Inductees that will remain until the next Anniversary Celebration.=20
A new hallway exits the dome into a special display room.=20
The Mako Shark, Manta Ray, Aerovette, and Stingray Racer made an =
unprecedented display of very rare cars!

          Thursday saw the arrival of many Caravans and things started =
getting=20
crowded! It was great the way the Museum planned so many activities, =
road tours, lectures, and=20
autograph sessions; a successful solution of keeping people moving.=20
The decision to hold the lectures and autograph sessions at the off-site =
Sloan Center with shuttle buses=20
constantly running was perfect.
That evening we attended the Lifetime Member/VIP Reception in the =
Museum,=20
enjoying a fabulous bluegrass band, lots of delicious appetizers and a =
cash bar.

      Friday, more Caravans arrive from New Mexico, California, Utah, to =

name a few.
And how does one even begin to describe the VIP's of the Corvette story =
who=20
were in attendence giving lectures and patiently signing autographs? In =
no=20
particular order, there was Dave McLellan, Dave Hill, Gib Hufstrader, =
Randy Wittine, Tom Peters, Harlan=20
Charles, Gordon Killebrew, and the new Hall of Fame Inductees and =
others adding to the=20
excitement.=20
And especially, it was wonderful seeing Wil Cooksey, still recovering =
from his=20
accident, at every session with his wonderful sense of humor and hearty =
laugh.

       That afternoon, the NCRS donor plaque was dedicated in the =
Library &=20
Archives with Vito Cimilluca and Terry McMamnon doing the honors. Then =
there was the=20
ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the new addition and that evening =
the Hall of Fame=20
Banquet saw the induction of NCRS member John Hinckley, Duane "Sparky" =
Bohnstedt, and=20
racers Jerry Thompson and Tony DeLorenzo. Filmed tributes to each of the =
recipients were=20
played, with the most impressive being the one to John Hinckley by GM's =
Bob Lutz!

       Saturday the excitement continued with the new Inductees holding=20
their seminars. Corvette Production Manager, Harlan Charles and team =
held their "walk around" of the=20
2010 models with Q & A opportunties. The 10/15/20 Year Membership =
Recognition and=20
Presentation was held and our own Karen Blandini and Steve Cataldo =
received their 20 yr. pins and=20
cut the cake!

Then there was the surprise unveiling of the Stingray Concept car by Tom =

Peters. This car played the role of "Sideswipe" in the movie, =
Transformers 2: Revenge of the=20
Fallen. (Hallmark has issued this car as a Christmas ornament and you =
can find the "transformer" at Wal=20
Mart). Wendell Strode also discussed the planning of the NCM Motorsports =
Park.=20
Details and updates can be found at =
www.motorsportspark.org<http://www.motorsportspark.org/>

       And how's this for some impressive numbers? There were over 4,500 =

Corvettes in attendence with almost 5,300 people registered. Overall, =
the visitor count was over=20
24,000 with 1,875 becoming new members! All of this would not have been =
possible without the=20
tireless dedication and hard work of Wendell Strode and the entire =
staff, employees, and many=20
volunteers. This Museum is world-class and it is up to us to support it =
in any way.=20
Memberships, brick sales, raffle sales, and store sales are crucial to =
the Museum!

       I want to thank all of you who are members and for putting up =
with=20
me constantly selling raffle tickets! Imagine the excitement when the =
winning ticket for=20
the red convertible was drawn at the Museum and the winners were from =
Northshore Corvettes and were=20
present to receive their car! These sales have helped me achieve Master =
Ambassador=20
status and I am most appreciative.

       Respectfully,
      =20
                Glenda Fischer   =
